14 Ways to Learn the Secret to Happiness
12th Way: Get into the Flow
Flow is the form of joy, excitement and happiness that occurs when we are so absorbed in an activity we love that we can loose ourselves and time seems to stand still. What creates flow is unique to each one of us. To find and sustain true happiness in our lives, we must get off the sidelines and Get into the Flow.
Finding your flow is similar to finding your life’s purpose or calling (the topic of yesterday’s post, below) in that the activities which bring us the most happiness and fulfillment
are typically ones that touch our hearts and souls in the most significant ways. Whereas discovering your life’s purpose is on a much grander scale in terms of defining “who” we are and what we plan to do with the same time we have, getting into the flow is more of a set of day-to-day actions that make us feel great about ourselves and lives.
One way to get into the flow is to change from a human “being” to a human “doing.” Rather than being stuck in the neutral position, shift to drive and begin to experience what you have always wanted. Take up rock climbing, skiing, or begin training for a 5K run. Look at activities that are not associated with exercise as well. For example, begin practicing a hobby that’s been on your mind. Learn pottery, begin to garden, or work on old cars. Just like yesterday I asked you to write down what you are most passionate about regarding your life, do the same thing here. Make a list of all the activities that “feel” good to you and start living them; start “doing” them.
Get into the flow as often as you can. Sure, life can get in the way sometimes but make what’s important to you a priority, too. It’s all about balance and choices. Commit to waking up 30 minutes earlier or going to bed later in order to make more room in your day for what’s important to you. Loose yourself in yourself for just a few minutes each day and see your life begin to change, and flow with more happiness.
