How to “want” productively, instead of being focused on what we don’t want, is the first step in identifying what we want for our lives. We must first learn “how to want” instead of focusing on what we don’t want. There are three different kinds of wants, each with its own unique purpose in brining us happiness and the life we deserve.
Real Wants
Refer to your “don’t want” list you I asked you to create yesterday. If you turn these around you will discover your real and true wants. Here are a couple of my “don’t wants” turned around to become “real wants”:
I don’t want to give up on my dream = I want to live my dream
I don’t want to quit too soon = I want to accomplish what I have started
I don’t want to look stupid = I want to be successful and happy
Now look at your “don’t wants” and turn these around to be wants. See the difference?
Negative Wants
We must turn negative wants inside out before we can move away from them. Negative wants are the ones that don’t feel particularly good to us. For example, if you were to say. “I want to lose weight,” focuses on not wanting to be overweight. This is clearly a negative want. Or, “I want to be happy,” suggests strongly you are unhappy. Consider the negative wants in you life and begin turning these inside-out.
Rightful Wants
These are wants you may not think you are worthy or entitled to have, but you definitely deserve them. When considering you “rightful wants” understand there are not limits and no conditions. We can all aspire to these wants with no judgments. For too long, many of us have been told we “should” do something or we “should” be something.
“Shoulds” are very dangerous because they set limits and restrain us from going after our hearts’ true desire. It’s OK to give and receive love, it’s OK to have money, it’s OK to be who you are meant and want to be. It’s OK to be selfish and allow yourself to begin feeling and living these wants. Begin making you Rightful Want list today. You can list both material and spiritual items. Allow yourself to do this now. Remember, “like attracts like.” When will you begin focusing on what you truly like and want for your life?
